Free To Grow’s band monkey Merlin was initially bummed out when he started his duties. His impression of the band was not at all favourable. They had duped his younger brother Marvin by inviting him to sit on stage with Free To Grow during a benefit gig for the local SPCA. Sounds fun right?
Merlin was initially filled with envy until he found out that this was all part of a nefarious plot to auction his brother off to raise funds. With a well known animal lover (host of CBC Radio 1 Shift, Vanessa Vander Valk) as MC for the event, no one in the family expected Marvin would be sold off.
As compensation to the family Merlin was invited to become a member of Free To Grow and bestowed the title of Chief Road Monkey. Fortunately he quickly adapted to his new reality and began to enjoy his time, despite his strenuous duties.
The most recent trip to play at The Old Boot Pub in Gagetown will forever be a highlight in Merlin’s career. After doing his usual scouting out of the pub, he helped set things up and then sat back in a corner to enjoy the music.
All in a day’s work right? So it might seem, but then the story of Merlin took a different turn. Unbeknownst to the rest of the band, Merlin had been coyly and surreptitiously casting romantic glances towards someone all night. His irresistible charm took vocalist Catherine Leblanc by surprise and she was swept away by our impetuous rascal of a monkey. Little did we know how this night might turn out for Merlin, but we now know that he has fully embraced the rock and roll lifestyle.
